Currently, the industry practice is to adopt the Federal Standard
209D to measure the cleanliness in a clean room. Six classes have
been established. These six classes are:
· Class 100,000
· Class 10,000
· Class 1,000
· Class 100
· Class 10
· Class 1
The class number refers to the maximum number of particles less
than one half of a micron (1/2000 mm) allowed in one cubic foot
of air.
The table shows the cleanroom requirements by the semiconductor
and pharmaceutical industries. The needs of each process is also
shown.
